Who can you trust now?
Published on February 26, 2005 By Phil Osborn In Yahoo
For three periods of time now, for at least several hours each, and, I suspect, several days, including the present time and most of the past two weeks, I have not been able to get to my Yahoo email account. I've heard rumors that this is happening to other people. And, try to complain. There is no route. The "help" system has no option to reach a human being, so far as I can determine. I have tried leaving messages with no response. Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening? Is Yahoo about to go under, or is this just a temporary glitch? I recall using an email service a couple of years back that suddenly stopped operation, without warning, but with many assurances that they would soon be back on line - not true, unfortunately - and the company that bought them, as it turned out, after a couple hours of my calling and being referred to someone else again and again, finally told me that it was just too bad. Everyone's files had been deleted. I dread that happening again.

I have had odd instances with yahoo as of late, myself. I have noticed from time to time that my password has come up invalid or that e mails that I have sent out have yet to be recieved.

weird...

As I sit at a different branch of the library today, with a different sysop and configuration, I am getting nowhere at all attempting to get to my mail, either at Yahoo or at my alternative service. The patron to my left says that he can hardly get to any site he tries, and the lady to my right cannot get to her Yahoo email either - for the past three days, she says. Clearly there is something nasty afoot here.

Well, I tried it just to see what was up. I logged into and played with my Yahoo mail without any problem.

Also, a couple of days ago I sent mail from my website to a Yahoo user and he replied toady, so it must be working for him as well.

It sounds like a localized problem. They might be different branches but they probably have things in common anyway. Have you talked to the library system's tech people about it?

I don't particularly trust any Internet service, but especially not free ones. I had an unpleasant experience with a couple of "Ineternet based hard drives" once. They both closed the same month, giving only short notice, while I was away on vacation for a month. Bye bye, files.

According to the library personnel here, there has been a specific problem with Yahoo - from Yahoo's end. It seems that Yahoo treats the entire library system as a single user and is denying them service on account of overuse!

Can you believe that anyone could be that stupid? Especially a communications giant like Yahoo. Where is Dilbert when we need him?

I note that the one time recently that I was able to get to my email was at the University of California Irvine, not the local library system.

Speaking of which: Here I am back at UCI, having just watched the movie "Turtles Can Fly," which had been advertised as a positive, uplifting thing, whereas in fact, it is extremely depressing and negative, altho very well done. Anyway, no problemo getting onto my mail from here, except for the incredibly slow ancient iMacs they have here in the Student Union. Back at the library in Santa Ana, I spoke to several of the regulars there, all of whom used Yahoo for mail, and all of whom have been cut off, again, allegedly because of this idiotic behavior by Yahoo.

yahoomail is a free service, hence you don't have the right nor the priviledge to say anything against them. who told you you have? after letting you
in my house? we're all guests. i mean, there are still decent people on this earth?!

And if I invite you into my house, which just happens to have all kinds of advertisements festooning the rafters, and little recordings playing continuously (BUY Supperware, BUY Supperware,...) and then I serve you little portions of food, all labeled and with coupons attached, and you discover that among your fellow guests are the heads of half the major corporations on the planet, all nervously eyeing your checkbook, you should protrate myself, I suppose, and dedicate your life to singing the hossanahs of what a WONDERFUL host I am.

And Yahoo is providing this wonderful FREE service out of the goodness of their hearts... And that's why they recently bumped the FREE storage for my FREE account way up, and why my Google account has a Gig of free storage. They just LOVE to help people out.

Right.
